How to Build an Automated Shopify Collection That Merchandises Properly

How to Build an Automated Shopify Collection That Merchandises Properly visual guide

An automated collection adds products based on rules such as type, vendor, tag, price or inventory. It works well when the product data is controlled and the collection order is still reviewed commercially.

Create and check the collection

  1. Go to Products, then Collections, and create a collection.
  2. Select automated collection type.
  3. Choose whether products must match all conditions or any condition.
  4. Build conditions using stable product data rather than temporary wording.
  5. Save, then inspect every product pulled into the collection.
  6. Set the sort order intentionally, using manual ordering where merchandising matters.
  7. Preview on mobile and check out-of-stock positions, image consistency and filters.

Document the tags and product types used by automated rules so other staff do not accidentally break them. Review the collection after bulk imports, launches and seasonal range changes. Automation decides eligibility, not whether the final customer-facing order makes sense.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
