How to Check Which Google Ads Conversions Are Used for Bidding

How to Check Which Google Ads Conversions Are Used for Bidding visual guide

If purchases, page views, add-to-baskets and contact clicks are all treated as primary goals, automated bidding may chase the easiest action rather than the commercial result. Review the goal setup before changing budgets or targets.

Audit the conversion actions

  1. Open Goals, then Conversions, then Summary in Google Ads.
  2. List every conversion action and its source.
  3. Check whether it is Primary or Secondary.
  4. Open campaign goal settings and confirm whether account-default goals are being used.
  5. Keep true business outcomes, such as purchases or qualified leads, primary where appropriate.
  6. Move diagnostic or supporting actions to secondary so they remain visible without driving bids.
  7. Check counting, value, attribution and conversion window settings.

Do not change goal settings casually on a live high-spend account because bidding needs time to adjust. Record the old setup, remove duplicates and verify that the primary action is firing correctly before asking the algorithm to rely on it.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
