How to Check Why a Shopify Product Is Not Showing Online

How to Check Why a Shopify Product Is Not Showing Online visual guide

When a Shopify product is missing from the storefront, the cause is normally availability, status, publishing, market rules, theme logic or collection conditions. Check these in order instead of repeatedly republishing the theme.

Work through the checks

  1. Open the product in Shopify admin. Confirm Status is Active. Draft and archived products do not appear as normal live products.
  2. Check sales-channel publishing. In Publishing or Sales channels and apps, confirm Online Store is selected. If the product should appear elsewhere, verify those channels separately.
  3. Check the market. Use the market selector and product availability settings to confirm the item is offered in the visitor's country. Test from the intended market rather than only from the admin preview.
  4. Check inventory and theme behaviour. If every variant has zero stock, the product may be hidden by the theme, collection filters or an app. Decide whether sold-out products should remain visible.
  5. Open the direct product URL. Use Online Store preview or paste the product handle into an incognito window. A working page with no collection visibility points to merchandising rather than publishing.
  6. Check collection conditions. For automated collections, compare product type, vendor, tags, price and inventory with every condition. Confirm whether the collection uses all conditions or any condition.
  7. Check search and navigation. A live product does not automatically appear in a menu. Search the exact title, inspect Search & Discovery settings and confirm relevant collections are linked.
  8. Check the theme template. Make sure the assigned template exists in the published theme and no custom code, metafield condition or app block hides the product.

Test as a customer

Use an incognito browser on mobile, select the relevant country and follow the same menu or campaign link a customer would use. Add an available variant to the basket and confirm price, currency and checkout eligibility.

If the issue began after a bulk import or app change, compare one working product with the missing product field by field. Record the cause and update the product-data process so the same omission is caught before the next launch.

Verification notes

Check product status, Online Store availability, publication date, market availability, inventory policy, collection conditions and theme filters. Preview the exact market in a signed-out browser because admin visibility does not prove storefront availability.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
