How to Use GA4 DebugView to Check an Ecommerce Event

How to Use GA4 DebugView to Check an Ecommerce Event visual guide

GA4 standard reports can take time to process, so they are a poor place to debug a new event. DebugView gives a near real-time event stream from devices using debug mode.

Run the test

  1. Enable debug mode through Google Tag Manager Preview, the Google Analytics Debugger or your implementation method.
  2. Open GA4 Admin and select DebugView.
  3. Choose the correct debug device if several are active.
  4. Perform one clean journey on the site.
  5. Select each event and inspect parameters such as currency, value, transaction_id and items.
  6. Check that purchase fires once and uses a unique transaction ID.

Consent settings, ad blockers and browser restrictions can affect the test, so record the setup used. DebugView proves that GA4 received an event from the test device, not that every live visitor is tracked correctly. Follow it with Realtime and processed-report checks.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
