How to Write a Creator Brief That Still Produces Natural Content

How to Write a Creator Brief That Still Produces Natural Content visual guide

A creator brief should remove avoidable confusion without scripting the life out of the content. The creator needs to know the commercial job, mandatory facts and boundaries, while keeping control of the language and delivery that made their content useful in the first place.

Write the brief in practical sections

  1. Start with one objective. State whether the content needs to introduce the product, demonstrate a result, answer an objection or drive a particular action. Do not ask one 20-second video to do all four.
  2. Describe the customer and problem. Give a short description of who the product is for, what they struggle with and what they may already have tried. Avoid a page of brand demographics that does not change the content.
  3. Set the deliverables exactly. List the number of videos or images, orientation, approximate length, platform, deadline, raw-file requirement and whether captions or cover frames are needed.
  4. Separate mandatory points from ideas. Mandatory points cover correct product names, claims, disclosures, exclusions and the call to action. Hooks, scenes and formats should be offered as options unless the campaign genuinely requires them.
  5. Explain the product truthfully. Include how it works, the main benefit, usage instructions and limitations. Flag wording that cannot be used, especially regulated beauty claims or unsupported performance promises.
  6. Define approval and revisions. Say who signs off the concept, how many revision rounds are included and what counts as a correction versus a new creative direction.
  7. Agree usage rights before filming. State whether the brand can use the work organically, on the website, in email or as paid advertising, and specify the duration, territories and editing rights.
  8. Give the creator room to respond. Ask what they would change to make the idea feel natural to their audience. Their answer often improves the hook more than another internal review.

Check the brief before sending

Remove any sentence that tells the creator exactly how to speak unless the wording is legally necessary. Then ask whether somebody outside the business could identify the objective, deliverables, deadline, mandatory claims, approval process and usage rights without a follow-up call.

A good brief is normally one or two useful pages, not a brand handbook. Attach product information and visual references separately, label references as inspiration rather than something to copy, and put every commercial agreement in writing.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
