How to Review Google Ads Quality Score Without Chasing a Perfect 10

How to Review Google Ads Quality Score Without Chasing a Perfect 10 visual guide

A low Quality Score can point to a mismatch between query, advert and landing page, but a score of 10 does not guarantee profitable sales. Use it to find weak areas, then judge changes against commercial performance.

Add the diagnostic columns

  1. Open the Keywords table in a Search campaign.
  2. Modify columns and add Quality Score, Expected CTR, Ad relevance and Landing page experience.
  3. Add historical versions of the same columns if available.
  4. Filter for active keywords with meaningful impressions and below-average components.
  5. Compare the search terms, advert copy and landing page for each weak theme.
  6. Split genuinely different intent into a tighter ad group or improve the destination page.

Do not rewrite a profitable campaign purely to improve the score, and do not judge new or low-volume keywords too quickly. The useful question is which component explains the mismatch and whether fixing it improves qualified traffic, conversion and cost.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
