How to Exclude Your Own Visits From GA4

How to Exclude Your Own Visits From GA4 visual guide

Teams repeatedly checking products, testing checkout and refreshing campaign pages can create misleading traffic. GA4 can identify internal traffic using IP rules, then exclude it with a data filter.

Set it up carefully

  1. In GA4 Admin, open Data streams and select the web stream.
  2. Open Google tag settings, then Define internal traffic.
  3. Create a rule for the relevant office or fixed IP addresses.
  4. Return to Admin, then Data filters, and open the Internal Traffic filter.
  5. Set it to Testing first rather than Active.
  6. Use the test data filter dimension in reports or explorations to confirm the rule identifies the right traffic.
  7. Activate only after verification.

Remote workers and changing IP addresses make this method incomplete, and an active filter is not retroactive. Document the rule and review it when offices, agencies or networks change. Use separate test properties or developer traffic controls where the implementation needs stronger separation.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
