How to Test a Shopify Discount Before You Promote It

How to Test a Shopify Discount Before You Promote It visual guide

A discount can save correctly in Shopify and still fail for the customer because dates, markets, products, combinations or minimum requirements conflict. Test the complete basket before promoting the offer anywhere.

Test the discount

  1. Read the setup as a customer rule. In Discounts, open the code or automatic discount and write down eligibility, dates, timezone, minimum spend, products, customer segments, usage limits and combinations.
  2. Use a clean browser session. Open an incognito window, select the intended market and avoid using a staff account whose tags or login status can change eligibility.
  3. Build the minimum valid basket. Add the exact qualifying products and quantity, then apply the code. Check the saving, subtotal, tax and delivery threshold.
  4. Test the boundary. Try one penny below a minimum spend, one unit below a quantity threshold and a product outside the eligible group. The offer should fail with a message that makes sense.
  5. Test variants and sale products. Confirm every intended shade, size and bundle qualifies, and decide whether already discounted items should be included.
  6. Check combinations. Apply delivery, product and order discounts in the combinations you plan to allow. Verify Shopify does not silently choose a different discount than the customer expects.
  7. Complete a real test order. Use a low-value test product or approved payment method, then check order reporting, confirmation email and refund behaviour.
  8. Repeat on mobile. Confirm the code box, error messages and final price are visible before payment.

Check promotion wording against reality

Compare the advert, email and landing-page terms with the Shopify configuration word for word. If the creative says sitewide but the discount excludes bundles or sale items, fix the setup or the claim before launch.

Record the tested basket, market, code, expected saving and result. After launch, monitor discount errors and customer-service contacts because an unexpected product tag or market condition can still create failures.

Verification notes

Test a qualifying basket, a basket just below the threshold, excluded products, relevant markets, sale items and every permitted discount combination. Complete an order where practical, because a discount visible in cart can still interact differently with delivery or checkout.

After arriving at a fork in the road in my career I decided to take the plunge and wander purposefully, with determination, into the maelstrom of consultancy in online sales. It's been the most exciting decision I've ever made and I've been able to work with some of the most interesting brands the UK has to offer. I specialise in the intersection of ecommerce and marketing, the part of the Venn diagram that eCommerce & Marketing people don't like to occupy because it takes a lot of plate spinning - this is where I thrive.
